The Nested Cylinder Bycatch Reduction Device
This device was selected because of its potential to address a serious issue of the bycatch of juvenile red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp trawl fishery. WWF has been working with the inventor, Dr. Glenn Parsons, to secure funding for the development of a smaller and lighter version of the device which can still maintain the effectiveness of its bycatch reduction. Fishermen can be reluctant to place large, heavy objects in their nets, for a number of reasons, including safety considerations.Dr. Parsons has developed several prototypes and it is envisaged that these will be field tested during 2009 to measure their effectiveness.
